Special abilities[]

This creature is flagged as plot and is thus immune to any negative effect, including damage and death. It is, however, vulnerable to Mordenkainen's disjunction to the point where casting that spell on this creature will destroy it.

The weapon of this creature causes a planar rift to occur on-hit, killing those who fail a DC 17 fortitude saving throw. For the times when that does not kill its target, the weapon gets +1d12 massive criticals and is a +15 weapon for the purpose of penetrating damage reduction.

Notes[]

  • This summons is intended to be thought of as a floating weapon, but it is technically a creature, subject to the same treatment (e.g. buffs, potion use) as other summons.
  • Dismissal is effective at removing the blade because it destroys, rather than attempts to kill, the summon.
  • Casting a dispelling spell on the caster may unsummon the blade, as it would any other summon.
  • Due to a bug, the effective spell level of this summon's planar rift ability (for the purpose of determining immunity by spell level) is regarded as the same as the last spell cast by its summoner. Under intended use, this would always be spell level 9, but this can vary, as there are ways to cast additional spells without disrupting black blade of disaster (as described in that spell's article).
  • There is an unused blueprint for a different summons named "black blade of disaster". This unused creature is similar to (but not quite the same as) a summoned helmed horror without a weapon. Likely, this is a remnant of an abandoned attempt to implement the black blade spell similar to Shelgarn's persistent blade, a remnant that was not removed from the game's resources when the current implementation was chosen. The ResRef of this (unfinished and) unused creature is x2_s_batthorr001.

Previous versions[]

  • Prior to version 1.69, this summons erroneously had weapon focus in the longsword (instead of in the greatsword).
