A spell's components are what you must do or possess to cast it.
In spell descriptions, the components entry includes an abbreviation that tell what type of components are required:
- A verbal (V) component is a spoken incantation. To provide a verbal component, you must be able to speak in a strong voice. A silence effect or a gag spoils the incantation (and thus the spell). A spellcaster who has been deafened has a 20% chance to spoil any spell with a verbal component that he or she tries to cast. Somatic spells do not have a verbal component, and thus are not affected by magical silence, deafness, etc.
- A somatic (S) component is a measured and precise movement of the hand. An arcane spellcaster wearing armor or using a shield may incur a chance to fail any spell he or she casts that have a somatic component. In Neverwinter Nights, having a free hand is not required to cast spells with a somatic component (unlike in pen and paper).
