The dire rat is a small, fast and furry animal that makes a good animal companion. Although it is of small size, it is very cunning. Every 5 levels of the master, the dire rat's diseased bite becomes harder to resist.

Special abilities Edit
A dire rat companion's natural attack (a bite) increases in base damage and enhancement bonus as levels are gained. The DC of the on-hit disease was also intended to increase, but this is not seen in the game. (Intended DCs are provided in the following table for reference.)
- Added in the expansion packs.
- The dire rat animal companion's dexterity jumps from 17 at level 20 to 22 at level 21. There is a corresponding jump in AC.
- This animal companion's skills start out with 4 skill ranks (before ability modifiers), and remain there up to level 20. At level 21, both skills jump to 23 ranks.
- Unlike most BioWare creatures, this creature's tag is not always its ResRef in all caps — at levels 1 to 20, its tag begins with "X1" instead of "X0".
