Gems are very popular with adventurers because they are small, portable, and light. They consist of precious and semi-precious stones, which typically have no use aside from their monetary value. Sometimes, though, a module will provide a special use for some types of gems, such as using them as reagents or quest items.
Typically, gems have no weight, and a stack of ten fits in a single inventory square.
Gems vary greatly in value, as shown in the below table. The base value is the value upon which stores set their buy and sell prices. (Most standard stores buy items at 35% of the base, subject to an appraise check.)
