Spells from the illusion spell school are used to alter perception and generate illusions.
This school is traditionally a favorite of gnomes, so player characters of that race automatically receive spell focus in illusion, regardless of whether or not they can cast spells. (This tradition dates back to the first edition of (Advanced) Dungeons & Dragons, when gnomes could be illusionists but not more general magic-users.)
