Constitution-boosting Items[]

I know others have discussed this before, but since it's frowned on to respond to old comments, I'm making a new section instead. The article says, "However, if a constitution buff is ending at the same time (typically when resting) then the loss of the constitution buff occurs first and can kill the creature before the polymorph is removed." Now, this is written in such a way that it sounds like it's talking about spells. What people need to know is that any body armor, helmet or shield (that was equipped at the time of polymorphing) that boosts constitution also falls into this category. So if you have a body armor that gives +4 constitution, for example, you need to cancel polymorph with at least 2*clevel(constitution modifier adjustment amount * character level) + 1 hit points remaining. Otherwise, you will die as a result of cancelling polymorph. HolyGuardian80 (talk) 16:02, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

  • Yes, it is talking mostly about spells. Benefits from equipped items are lost at the beginning of the polymorph, not at the end. Are you are talking about the special case of shifter forms (which are not limited to merging just armor, helmet, and shield)? I guess there would be a split-second with no boost, similar to the beginning of the polymorph. --The Krit (talk) 21:05, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
  • I think you're right and I think I'm wrong but I need to test things out a bit more. What I thought was a death due to a constitution-boosting item may have actually been a death due to a constitution-boosting spell. The spell did not expire but part of my HP in elemental form was from the spell. I cancelled polymorph with 11 health left while I had Greater Endurance active and died. I also had robes on that gave +4 constitution but it's likely that the death was caused by the presence of the spell, not the stat boost on the robes.
I guess the article could use a slight revision because death can occur even if the constitution buff is not ending but rather merely by its presence while shifting. Essentially, players need to be aware that they cannot shift if their remaining hit points are less than the bonus hit points they are getting via any spell (or bard song for that matter), even spells that increase constitution. • I noticed something: I had a helmet giving -2 constitution and a body armor giving +4 constitution. No spells influencing constitution, no bard song giving temporary hit points, etc. My dragon druid was low in health and died due to shifting. So I believe it can be an issue if one wears both an item that boosts constitution and an item that deducts constitution during shifting. Wearing only the helmet that gives -2 constitution but not the body armor that gives +4 constitution doesn't produce the same issue. HolyGuardian80 (talk) 21:17, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

Polymorph as a means to protect equipped items from rust monsters and bebiliths, etc[]

It could be noted that, when polymorphed (at least, wild shape, elemental shape and dragon shape all work this way), a player character becomes immune to the item destruction abilities of monsters such as rust monsters and bebiliths (for example, Ruin armor). Or perhaps the right way to say it is that items equipped before polymorphing (whether merged or not) are immune to abilities such as Ruin Armor while the polymorph is active.
